History and Origin

The Biewer Terrier originated in Germany in the early 1980s with breeders Werner and Gertrud Biewer. While breeding Yorkshire Terriers, they were surprised when a puppy was born with a unique tricolored coat due to a recessive genetic mutation. This pup, “Schneeflöckchen von Friedheck,” became the foundation of the breed.

Dedicated to developing this new variety, the Biewers carefully bred for the tricolored pattern, creating a line of dogs with a striking blend of blue/black, white, and gold. Initially called “Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon,” the breed gained popularity for its beauty and playful nature.

In 2007, DNA testing confirmed the Biewer Terrier as a separate breed with unique genetic markers. This distinction paved the way for recognition, culminating in the AKC’s acknowledgment of the breed in 2021.

Today, the Biewer Terrier is celebrated for its elegance, loyalty, and charm, standing as a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders.
